Visual/Vowel Combination
Title: Poetry Making
The teacher has words with vowel combinations in a envelop. Each student gets
a envelop and has to construct a poem using the different vowel combinations.
Seeing the different words with vowel combinations will help the students
recognize different patterns of vowels and how to incorporate them into poetry
making.

Title: Word Detectives
Idea: Students will be given meaningful literature such as poetry or books
and asked to identify vowel combinations such as "ee" and "ai". They will learn
to identify and read words that contain the vowel combinations by searching
through the literature to find other "ee" and "ai" words. The students will then
use these newfound words to create their own dictionary with a section for each
new vowel combination.

Title: Dictionary Stations
Idea: The teacher has different stories hung up on the walls around the
classroom, set up in stations. Have the students walk from story to story,
finding all of the vowel combinations they can in the different stories. Then,
as a class, create a dictionary of all the different vowel combinations,
including examples from all the stories. Then as the year progresses, when the
class finds new words, the words can be added to the dictionary.

Title: Vowel Combination Worksheets
Idea: Teacher gives each student a worksheet with a vowel combination written at
the top. Three words that have the vowel combination in the word are also
written on the worksheet. It is up to the student to make a sentence out of the
words provided. Example: OA = boat, goat, soap. "I washed the goat with soap
while riding in the boat." Do worksheets until each student has worked with each
different vowel combination.

Title: Matching
Idea: Pass out six cards with 3 vowel combinations on them to each student. An
example the cards would say seal, teal, bee, tree, rain, and train. Have the
cards mixed up and make sure they are face down on their desk. Tell the students
when you say go they must flip their cards over and match them together with the
right vowel combinations. When they are done they must stand up quickly as it is
a race to see who can do it the fastest. Than have the students check their
neighbors to make sure they are right. Now have the children find a new desk to
sit in and do the same thing at the other students desk. Make sure each student
has different vowel combinations at their desk. You can do this as many times as
desired.
