Kinesthetic/R, L, W Control Vowels

Title: "The Bossy R"

You can change this activity to match any letter that you have. Have cards that have words such as burn, turn, sir, and her on them. Use a sticky note to cover each letter after the vowel. Next step to say to the kids is "lets see what happens to the vowel sound when it is followed by the letter r, or which ever letter you are using."  Explain that the letter r makes the vowel sound different, that is why we call it the bossy R. When doing this activity have the students hold up the signs that you have made. More ways to use this activity are found in the resource website

Title: A Unit on R-controlled Vowels (designed for Grade 6)

This resource was designed to be used as a spelling unit on r-controlled vowels. It introduced the basic list of words, as well as extended the list to include content words, strategy words, and individual needs words. It addressed the objectives of Spelling and Thinking, Spelling and Writing, Spelling and Reading, and Spelling and Vocabulary. At the end it allowed for meeting the learning needs of the different modalities. The Kinesthetic idea was as follows:

Have a spelling race. Designate "Start" and "Finish" points on the floor of your classroom. Call out a word for each student to spell aloud in turn. If a student spells the word correctly, he or she takes one 12 inch step toward the finish line. The first student to cross the finish line is the winner.

Title: Bossy R,LW Hand clapping

The teacher gives words to the students then they as a whole clap the sounds of the words. The teacher gives words with the bossy R,L,W sounds for the students to clap out the sounds. This gives the students a better understanding and recognition of the words.

Title: The R, L, W Word Race

Idea: Have each row of the classroom be a team and put a word family such as

-ark on the board and have the first member put together as many words as they can (bark, dark, hark, lark). The next team member could do -alk. And another team member could do -own. Give them a time limit and at the end see how many words each group came up with.

Title: Stepping to Find R-Controlled Vowels

Idea: Write down several words on separate pieces of paper. Tape the paper to the floor. Make sure you use words that are R-controlled and those that are not R-controlled. Have the students stand in a circle and each person needs to find one word on the floor that is R-controlled. Once they find the word they need to stand on that word. You can then have the students say the word outloud and use it in a sentence. This will get the kinesthetic learners up and moving around.

Title: Bossy R Word Search
Idea: The teacher can make a Bossy R chart before hand with "ir", "or", "ur", "er" and "ar" in columns. Assign the students into groups of three or four (depending on the number of students in your class). Tell the students that they are to work as a team and find words in their environment that fit under each of the Bossy R columns. You can use your classroom, part of the school or go outside. (Example: under "ir" - bird, "or" - story "ur" - nurse "er" - her and "ar" - car) The first team to have 5 in each column wins. (Depending on the grade level, you can change this number to more or less).
