R, L, W Controlled Vowels/Auditory

Title: The Bossy R

Idea: In this activity, the students will learn how vowels change from long to short and short to long with adding R to the end of the word. I have cards made up that have words on them like bad, fox, hen, sit, and fun. The students will read these words out loud that way they can hear what the word sounds like but more importantly the way the vowel sounds. After this the students will read the words but they will replace the last letter with an r to see how this changes the vowel sound of that word. I will then ask the students what vowel sound the words make. I will then show them other words and have them read them out loud and tell me the vowel sound of that word. I will also do this with the letters L and W.

Title: That Changable R

Idea: Discuss to the students that the "or" always sounds like the "or" in for, and have the students think of other examples to write on the board. The "ar" always sounds like the "ar" found in car, and have them again think of examples on the board. The "ir," "er," and "ur," sound the same as in bird, her, and fur.
Have them again think of words to write up on the board. When finished, review all the words and remind them that or, er, ir, ar, ur sounds like what is heard in for, her, bird, car, and fur.

Title: How many words?
Idea: To begin this lesson the teacher will review R controlled vowels. (BOSSY R - ar, er, ir, or and ur) The teacher will get the children started by brainstorming bossy R words and writing them on the board. After they have brainstormed, the teacher will erase the board and quickly review the rules of Bossy R again to ensure the students understand.
Divide the class into groups of 3. In their groups, students are to come up with R controlled words. The catch.... you get points for the amount of syllables each Bossy R word contains. Some should have 3 syllables, 2 syllables, and 1 syllable. (Syllables are prior knowledge.) Review syllable strategies: hand under chin, clapping etc. Points are given for these words Example. marble - 2 points fork - 1. The group with the most points wins! Give them a time limit to come up with words.
When the game has been completed, the teacher will go over the lists to ensure that all words have a Bossy R. Then the children (using prior knowledge of syllables) will count up their scores. While the teacher is checking groups, the students can use words from their list and make up silly sentences with their groups for fun! You can also use this game with the L and W words.
