Auditory/Consonant Blends

Title: Consonant blends and digraphs puzzles

These puzzles help to reinforce and develop a variety of reading skills. The 4-1/2" x 3-3/4" puzzle cards are made of heavy cards and laminated for durability. The jigsaw cut of each puzzle guarantees that only the correct puzzle pieces will match. All of the words on the puzzle cards begin with a consonant blend. For example: snow, slide, spider, etc. Colorful pictures support and encourage independent success of students.

The children will practice sounding out the consonant blends and the ending sounds to determine what two cards go together. After the children complete a word, they will then read the word to their classmates.

Title: Move the Sounds

Idea: Make color coded squares containing blends, beginning sounds, and word families. After you have reviewed those concepts with the students use the cards to form words. First start with the beginning consonant sound and then do the same with blends and word families. Then demonstrate that the sounds they heard can be put together to make new words. Have the students read a word family and then display a consonant or blend next to the word family. Say the sounds as you go. Then say them together like 'c' -- 'at' -- 'cat.' Continue matching different beginning sounds and blends with the word families to see how many words you can make. After each word, have the students say the different parts out loud and then combine them to form the word.

Variation: The students can write the words down on paper using colored pencils to distinguish the different sounds.

Title: Spin and Snake
Idea: You need to create or modify a spinner and a gameboard for this activity. On the spinner, mark places for different consonant blends (cr, pl, st, br). Find pictures or magazine cutouts with these blends in them (broom or step) and paste onto the board in an 'S' shape. Gather various playing pieces. One player spins the spinner and says aloud the sound made by the blend where the spinner stops. The player then moves his/her playing piece to the next space on the board with a picture of something that begins with that blend.
Example: If the spinner lands on cr, the player would move his playing piece forward to the first space
with a cr object on it. If he lands on a picture of a crown, he must say the word "crown" aloud. Players take turns until someone reaches the end of the snake path.
