Tactual/Consonants Title: Sand Paper Letters Students can have difficulty with letters that look alike like p, q, d, and b. The sandpaper will provide a rough surface for the students to trace around. These sandpaper letters have been cut with a die-cutter. There is a definite right and wrong side to the sandpaper letters which will help with the difference between the d and b or p and q. Resource:
Title: Blending Words on the Overhead The overhead can help students experience the blending of letters into words. These letters have been cut from a die-cutter out of transparent colored report covers. Students can made up words put letters on the overhead. By removing and adding letters on the overhead, they can practice word patterns. Resource:
Title: Recognizing Consonants with Foam Letters Find a puzzle-like foam, textured board with the alphabet on it. Remove the consonants from the board in front of the students, showing them where all of the consonants take place in the alphabet. Allow them to feel the letters and have them think up words that begin with that consonant. This will allow the students to feel the letter, while seeing what it looks like and discovering words that begin with that letter.
Title: What’s That Sound? Display consonant letter sets on walls around the room. Ask children to bring in pictures from newspapers, magazines, advertisements, or other sources and place them under the appropriate letter set. Title: Magnetic Sorting Idea: Put magnetic letters on the sides of tin buckets. Have students bring 2-3 things from home or around the classroom, and have them one at a time put the object in the bucket going by the consonant that the object starts with. If it doesn't start with a consonant, then do the ending consonant. Go through the buckets as a class to check to see if the class gets it as a whole, and correct errors as a group. Resource:
