Meaningful Vocabulary/Tactile Title: Vocabulary Sort Idea: The best way to teach vocabulary is to make it meaningful to students. In order to do that I would have the students pick out 5-10 words that they did not know from their text book or reading book. Then with those words I would have the students find out what it means and write it on a piece of paper. Then I would have the students cut out the word and its meaning and they can try to match them up. This will allow a hands on activity for vocabulary.
Title: Making Words This modality requires the students to have a hands on approach to learning. Ideas for using this in your classroom could include: create words and cut them apart. Have the students put the words together to form the correct word, then have them find a picture that represents their word. You can also use a file folder activity to reinforce their skills. When creating the file folder, only put 1/2 of the word in the folder and the other 1/2 they need to match. (Have these so they can be easily placed and removed by the student with velcro). Then they can create words. A picture may be required to help the students.
Title: Tactile Vocabulary Card Game Idea: This game uses 64 index cards. On the front of 32 of these cards, write a vocabulary word. Write the definition of the corresponding vocabulary words on the other 32 cards. Shuffle the deck of cards (with definitions) and deal four cards per player. Put the rest of the cards (with vocabulary words) face down on the table. Each player matches a word with its correct definition in his or her hand and then puts the pair of words down on a table. The game is won by the most number of pairs made. Each pair made is worth 2 points. On each turn, the player must match a word with its definition, or else the player can pick a card from the other person's deck, or pick from the top of the deck. If it results in a match, he or she can put the pair down for 2 points. If someone gets a pair, they get another turn. If not, the next player takes a turn. The game continues until all the cards are used up from the deck on the table and there are no more pairs to be made.
