Title: Best Way to Study

This site offers a variety of ideas that could be used for tactual learners to comprehend the main idea of stories. Some ideas for the tactual learner to use for the main idea of a story could be to act it out or use flash cards where you could add an important photo from the story and the child can view the photo and recall that main idea from the story. Tactual learners also like use their hands to doodle and write so you could also let the child use some webbing to get the ideas down on paper. Finally, as a class you could have the students make a mobile and have them draw pictures to use for the mobile of their main ideas of the story.

Title: Main Ideas Story Quilt

Idea:

Materials needed:

- 6 small squares of different colored construction paper per learner with holes punched in the middle of each side.

- pieces of yarn or string (2 inch pieces work well)

- crayons or markers

1. Before reading the story do a short mini-lesson about sequence and main ideas. Tell the students that while they are reading (or listening) to the story, pay very special attention to the order that things happen in the story.

2. For younger students, it may be necessary to list the events on the board as they happen. After reading, discuss the story, then tell the students that they will be making a quilt that illustrates the events in the story.

3. Give each student 6 paper squares and some pieces of yarn. The students should then write a sentence with a picture on each square that tells what happened in the story.

4. The students should put the squares in order as to how the events happened in the story, and then they can tie their quilt squares together

Title: Summary Picture Ball

Idea: After reading a story with pictures, take smaller versions of pictures in the book, laminate them, and Velcro them to a ball.  Then put Velcro spots on a poster board under the headings:  beginning, middle, and end.  Have the students roll the ball to each other in a small group.  When the person gets the ball, they are to take the picture that is facing up off of the ball and tell what is happening in that part of the story, and then put it on the Velcro poster board under that correct heading.

Title: Diorama

Idea: After reading a story, students could build a diorama that illustrates the main point of the story.  The dioramas could be created on a piece of cardboard or in a shoe box depending on the grade and requirements.  The website provided also provides many other great ideas for tactile learners.
