Auditory Modality

Title: What is the organization of the story?

Idea: It is important for author's to have a sense of organization, where in the story is the setting, plot, characters, and theme conveyed, and in what order?  Authors need to have stories properly organized so that students have a "frame of reference for processing and storing information." To enhance auditory learning, read a story aloud with your classroom.  After the story is completed, verbally discuss what the elements of the story are, including setting, plot etc.  What order did these appear in the story?  Why did the author put these elements in this story?  Are they important to the story and to understanding the story?  As one can see, this would be a very beneficial lesson idea to teach author's organization by auditory modality.

Kinesthetic Modality

Title: Body Order

Idea: Each student is assigned a part or line from the story.  The teacher will create a line with tape or something similar in the front of the class.  The students will then line up in sequential order to help them organize events from the story.  (For example, in the story the "Three Little Pigs," the students with lines about the pig who built his house out of straw would go at the beginning.  Then the students with lines about the pig who built his house out of sticks would be next.  The activity would continue until all students and/or parts of the story have been covered.  This will help kinesthetic students get up and move, while they are also able to practice the author's organization from the story.
